Self-Drive: Wine Valleys between the Pacific and the Andes 5d


This short itinerary explores some aspects of ‘the good life’ to be had around Santiago. Start with a visit to Colchagua Valley, one of the most famous wine-growing valleys around Santiago where you can visit wineries and taste some of the excelled wines produced in the region. From here, visit Valparaiso, the colorful historic port town, rumored to be one of the hot spots for avant-garde Chilean cuisine and the arts. Finally, round off your trip with a stay at the Jahuel Hot Springs Hotel, where you can relax in style and be pampered, before returning to Santiago.

Day 1


Upon your arrival in Santiago, you will pick up your rental car and start your journey travelling in direction of Chile’s famous wine valleys. As you make your way south, you will notice the landscape change from a bustling city to peaceful rolling hills and vineyards as far as the eye can see. Your final destination of the day will be the town of Santa Cruz located in the Colchagua Valley between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Day 2

Santa Cruz

Today you will have the day at leisure to explore your surroundings and get to know the Chilean countryside. Santa Cruz has very well preserved colonial architecture and the Colchagua Valley is well known for its viticulture and is home to some of the country’s best red wines. A tour to one of the local vineyards with a wine tasting is highly recommended. (B)

Day 3


In the morning you will begin your trip to the port city of Valparaiso (declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO) where you will fall in love with this city’s natural beauty and Chilean charm. There, you can take a ride on one of the town’s typical cable cars or visit some of the city’s most important landmarks such as its boardwalk, plaza or lookout points. (B)

Day 4


Today you will leave the coastline behind and start your ascent towards the Andes Mountain Range. Your drive will take you to the city of San Felipe home to traditional agricultural communities. A little further north at an altitude of 1,180 m / 3,871 ft. above sea level, you will find your hotel for the night known for its relaxing environment. (B, D)

Day 5


After breakfast, you will depart for Santiago where you will drop off your car and catch your flight out. (B)

This itinerary starts and ends in Santiago. Many international airlines offer regular flights to Chile’s capital city. You can pick up your rental car at the airport and go right from there.


Alternatively, consider adding a day to explore Santiago and get your vehicle delivered to the hotel on the following day, to start your self-drive adventure.

Chile car rental companies charge an additional airport service fee when the vehicle will be picked up from the airport. This service charge is not included in the published rates. This extra fee has to be paid upon returning the car.
Santiago and the central wine valleys have a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild, wet winters.
Wine tasting
Once in Santa Cruz, it is advisable to take a wine tasting tour where transport is provided so that you don’t have to drive from one winery to another. There are a number of options available.
